On marriage:"I am always learning from Carter,my wife. I respect her
sensitivity to the people around her and her thoughtful
approach to life. Ocassionally i don't handle something
the way she prefers, but i want to hear what she has to say
about it.
Being interested in each other's point of view --whether or
not you agree--is as important as taking pleasure in each
other's company."
Frank William,77On good conduct:"They took out my uterus before i turn 21. Cancer. I went
around feeling sorry for myself. it got to the point where
things had to go one way or the other--either live my life
as a desert or be fruitful and multiply, just in different
way.
I ended up raising one stepson and helping about 15 other kids
along the way. There's no lack of kids needing to be loved.
Just look around.
Last year, when i had my heart attack, every one of my kids
came to my door. 'Emma, let me get your groceries.''Emma, can't i
vacuum your living room?'They were falling all over each other
trying to do things for me."
Emma Braddock,69On people:"People can be nice. But when things go bad, the veneer of
civilisation goes in a hurry. People become worse than animals
when they feel threatened.
My grandchildrenare too trusting I'm trying to warn them, but not
make them feel badly about other people.i want them to be more
realistic.
Good or bad, people are what they are and there are times when
you can't count on anyone else to look out for you. It's better
all around if you never forget this."
George W.Hindels,80On spirituality:"One morning,i was sitting at my kitchen table, staring into space,
All of a sudden,a sunbeam crossed my table and lit up my crystal
salt shaker. There are all kinds of colours and sparkles. It was
one of the mosr beautiful sights i'd ever seen.
That very same salt shaker had been on that table for over 50 years.
Surely there must have been other mornings when the sun crossed
the table like that, but I was just too busy getting things done.
I wondered ehat else i'd missed.
I realised this was it, this was grace."
Martha McCallum,86On later life:"You spend half your life worrying about things that won't concern
you in the slightest at the end. When you're lying in bed dying,
you want people to sit by your side. That's it.
It's easy to get tricked by dreams of money or success, but all the
money in the world doesn't buy you kindness. You get that because
you gave it."
