This award-winning festival favorite offers a haunting, unique character study of an introverted young woman struggling to connect with those around her. Winner of the prestigious New Currents award at the most recent Pusan International Film Festival, as well as a favorite from the Sundance fest earlier this year, writer-director Lee Yoon-ki?s first feature This Charming Girl is one of the most distinctive and accomplished Korean films of the year, and one of that film industry?s most assured and promising directing debuts. A masterful, intimate character study of a difficult and withdrawn protagonist, Lee?s film is extraordinary in its ability to wed rigorous formal precision with a tender humanism in its depiction of the not-always-charming Jeong-hae.
A late-20s post office employee, lonely and distant Jeong-hae lives alone in Seoul and barely connects with those around her. The type of plain, introverted figure who all too easily recedes into the background, Jeong-hae has rigidly structured her daily routine, and people seem to figure little into this order. But gradually she attempts to reach out to others, and we begin to learn more about her need for affection, and her traumatic family past. After a series of failed encounters with men ? an ex-lover, a young writer she meets at work, a drunk in a hotel room ? it becomes apparent that Jeong-hae?s timidity actually masks a great deal of anger and desperation. Bolstered by a quietly commanding lead performance by Kim Ji-soo, This Charming Girl is a sharp, revelatory portrait of the intense emotions that simmer under the surface of the most outwardly calm soul. Honestly when i watched that movie, i couldn't figure that much out. Yah, did pierce together some ideas, thoughts together after watching the show. But did not felt the intense emotions, yah maybe a little at the end when everything became more obvious?, but the start were extremely slow. IF yah think those taiwaese serials were slow, this is even more longwinded. hehhe, FOR MOST PART , THE GIRL DAILY ROUNTINE IS LIKE IN SLOW MOTION, THREATENING TO MAKE YOU OVER LOOK TO MAKE YOU SIAN OF IT BASICALLY. but some parts of the movie was really worth thinking , and is actually a very true reflection of reality. =) i think the movie did come out , the way the director would want us to feel or reflect. =)
& kl, i won't poke you with satay stick las. its good las,no regrets watching with ya. AND its the first x i watch any show from the film festival, and did have fun rushing there. ahhaha, hehe, maybe we can make it an annual affair, hehhe, whenever there is a film festival we can go catch one movie that are showing!! so the next x i choose k ... hahah, tk turns.. =))
